Lavender might have a reputation for being “soft”, “passive”, or “domestic”. And while there’s nothing wrong with any of those things, I think there’s an insidious bias buried in our perception of lavender: there is nothing passive about domesticity. After all, carving out a beautiful place to live (internally or externally) involves structure and maintenance. It’s constant, calm, and clear-eyed labour.
“House” is intention solidified, in the form of a bold and weighty lavender. It seems to help everything else fall into place in a way that feels like magic. It braids together five different lavender oils: three distinct extractions from France, one from Bulgaria and one from Western Ontario. At the top, a fluorescent, funky flourish of hops - powerfully euphoric, clearing physical and mental blocks and discomfort - announces lavender’s purple-beach-glass tones. At the base, two different extractions of frankincense smoulder delicately: a classic, silvery-green version, and the intense “choya loban” (essentially the oil of frankincense on fire). Accented with birch tar, blue cypress, and elemi, they add a rustic, elemental texture to the lavender; perfectly imperfect, the way ceramic glaze pools irregularly in the imprint of a potter’s fingerprints.
It feels both serene and rustic, meditative and informal. It awakens, soothes and sings, amplifying lavender’s pleasures and its power to put our worlds in order.
